The Institute of Forgiveness (1928): temporalities and social representations in legal decisions in the First Amazonian Republic

This article analyzes the role of the legal elites in Manaus during the First Republic, focusing on the figure of judge Gaspar Antônio Vieira Guimarães and his article The Institute of Forgiveness (1928). The research combines theoretical approaches from Michel Foucault, François Hartog, and Reinhart Koselleck to understand how the judiciary, in applying and shaping laws, structured regimes of historicity and social representations linked to progress and order. Based on documentary and historiographical analysis, it highlights how the granting of judicial pardon, influenced by the Positivist School, functioned as a technology of disciplinary power, shifting from an act of clemency to an instrument of control and moral rehabilitation. The study demonstrates that the relationship between temporality, power, and normativity was central to the legitimization of legal authority in the Amazonian First Republic, contributing to the construction of narratives of civilization and modernity.
